2000 Impala code P0304

Postby mikolsautoservice » Sun Jun 13, 2010 8:48 pm

Has anyone had similar problems on a 2000 Impala? Code P0304 is coming up and cas is missing. New plugs, wires, compession is about 135psi on that cylinder. Power to fuel injector good. Getting gas to cylinder. 3.8l Could the intake gasket be leaking?

The first thing you need to do is to find out when the misfires are accuring. If they are happenning at idle the most liking cause are dirty fuel injectors. Verify this by looking at the misfire counters.

Ckeck verify spark to cyl. Run test wire and possibly move plugs from cyl to cyl. If OK run Injector bal test to check flow rates. +/_ 3PSI variance from cyl to cyl. Could also smoke test Induction system.

I second the fuel injector cleaning recommendation. If you have an updated Genisys with Code Assist, you can view the Top Reported Fixes - this experience based information is suggesting cleaning the fuel injectors...

Hopefully you have this resolved, but if not, & for future reference, here are some thoughts:

What is compression on the other cylinders? Valve sealing or sticking can give intermittent misfires which can escape
detection by a routine compression test. An aggressive fuel injector / carbon cleaning session may help if it hasn't
gone too far. If it has, valve job.

New parts does not mean good parts. Use only top quality parts and retest.

Vacuum leak possible. Observe fuel trims at idle, then under various driving conditions. If adding fuel at idle,
but ok at other times, vacuum leak very possible. Double check on dead cold engine with smoke or propane.

Look at freeze frame or failure records for this code. This will help tell you when & how code set.

If you fixed it, please post what you did so everyone can learn from it.

Have the Spark plugs been replaced? were AC delco plugs used? if they were, was the gap adjusted? if they were possibly plugs were damaged. AC delco Iridium plugs are made by NGK and the Gap is preset to .44" at factory and must not be disturbed even if the service information say .60" if the gap was disturbed it will cause a random misfire. So new plugs will fix it. if not then remember to KISS it (keep it simple st****), check the basics, fuel pressure, ignition, compression. good. luck.....

Sounds like you have a bad coil. You may have spark but it might not be good spark.
